What is Your Favorite Item At Zeno’s? | Ask Johnny

The rich, decadent flavors of Zeno’s World’s Most Famous Taffy™, truly sets the Boardwalk Sweet Shop apart from its competitors. Ranging from the spicy chili pepper to the ever-popular juicy watermelon, Zeno’s has the largest variety of saltwater taffy flavors in the world!

Although known for its ever so soft taffy, the mom and pop shop takes pride in knowing that everything sold in their stores is 100 percent homemade. (Given the exception of a few gummy products and lollipops.)

So, how does can one choose a favorite item from the 32 homemade ice cream flavors, a variety of brittles, caramels & hand-dipped chocolates?

That’s an easy and reoccurring question for third-generation candy maker, John Louizes.  Louizes taste tests everything the sweet shop makes whether it is a piece of saltwater taffy, a bite of chocolate or his personal favorite, a small sample of ice cream.

“I have a sample of everything,” Louizes said.  “It sounds like a great job but it is very tough on my waistline, he joked. “I have about 1-2 scoops a day, it’s my ‘breakfast of champions.’”

It is difficult to pick a few top contenders from all 32 ice cream flavors but for Louizes, Pookie’s Pick, Carrot Cake & Cookie Monster hold a near and dear place in his heart.

Pookie’s Pick: Vanilla Ice Cream combined with salted caramel, macadamia pieces, white chocolate, toasted coconut and a buttery graham cracker crust.  Pookie is also the nickname John has for his wife since the time they started dating.

Carrot Cake:  Vanilla ice cream, with a hint of cinnamon, homemade carrot cake pieces and a cream cheese frosting swirl.

Cookie Monster: Cookie ice cream combined with Chips Ahoy, Nutter Butter, M&M’s and Cookies and Cream pieces.

Now, the fan favorite of Zeno’s is definitely the saltwater taffy. But what really makes Zeno’s World’s Most Famous Taffyso unique? After 60+ years of pulling taffy, they have learned a few tricks to making sweet taffy that’s so light and smooth, it practically melts in your mouth.

The family has a special whipping technique to make every piece of taffy soft and delicious without ever being too hard; they have developed some great taffy flavors, too!  Over 100 flavors of mouthwatering temptations that smell every bit as rich as they taste, each one whipped up in small batches, triple checked for quality. Some flavors are seasonal, and some are just for fun that only last as long as they can put them in a wrapper before they’re snatched up!

Let us ask you, what’s your favorite product at Zeno’s?

Who Is the Most Influential Person To You? | Ask Johnny

Zeno’s prides itself on being a family owned and operated business. It is how they started and what serves as the core sweetness of the business model.

Each day third generation owner, John Louizes, is privileged to work alongside the person who has influenced him the most as well as someone who has contributed to the success of the taffy empire; his wife and partner-in-crime, Christina.

Sometimes running a candy business isn’t as sweet as it sounds. Like any business, frustrations can arise but John & Christina work as a team to ensure their business is running to its full potential. When things go pear shaped, Christina is not only the first person John goes to as the calming force but is also the person to bring him back down when he thinks he’s the greatest thing on earth…in a way she’s doing us all a favor…so when you see her, thank her.

On the side of being an incredible mom, to their sons Zeno, 9, & CJ, 5, which we all know is a FULL TIME JOB (with no breaks), Christina handles all web order fulfillment, administrative and HR responsibilities for the business…she’s basically a modern day Wonder Woman, Supergirl & Princess Leia wrapped into one.

Anyone who knows this power couple will tell you they are the prime example but are also each other’s inspiration. Christina understands her husband is fluent in this business and provides the correct support on any ideas from coming up with a new recipe to deciding to stretch Zeno’s into new opportunities.

It is important to respect and appreciate those who you work with especially when you are on a team. Christina wears many hats throughout the Zeno’s organization and is huge reason why John enjoys getting up for work every day.

**Fun Fact**
Zeno’s fans also can thank Christina as she is THE reason the ice cream flavor “Pookie’s Pick”. It’s everything she likes plus it is the nickname John has called her ever since they started dating.

Why is Daytona Beach Famous

Why Daytona Beach is called the World’s Most Famous Beach

When you think of why Daytona Beach is the World’s Most Famous Beach, you would think it’s because of its beautiful coastline, crashing waves, or kids on their Spring Break! To pay homage to Daytona Beach, where we have been located in since 1948, we even gave our saltwater taffy the name of the World’s Most Famous Taffy(tm) in Daytona beach’s honor.

While the reasons mentioned above are all true, the actual one behind this is because of its hard-packed sand. Due to this sand it allowed for motorized vehicles to drive on certain areas of the beach which led to the start of beach racing. Known as the old Daytona Beach Road Course, the beach became a Mecca where people would travel from across the country and world right to Daytona Beach.

These races were held for 50 years, until The Daytona International Speedway was introduced in 1959. Now, every year hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions from around the world come to Daytona Beach for the Daytona 500, Rolex 24, Coke Zero 400, and Bike races during Bike Week.

Why is it named Saltwater Taffy?

Why is it called Saltwater Taffy?

This is by far the most popular question we get asked in all of our stores. While we may create some of the most unique flavors in the world, we didn’t invent the name. It is actually quite an interesting story.

An old legend suggests that’s during the summer of 1883, young chocolatier David Bradley’s candy store was flooded by a series of three storms that brewed in the neighboring Atlantic Ocean. Bradley did not see that as a reason to close shop, and so he continued daily business. A neighboring candy store owner named Joseph Fralinger reportedly witnessed a transaction between Bradley and a young consumer one morning after the flooding occurred.

The customer, being a young girl asked Bradley if he had any taffy to sell. Bradley jokingly replied “I’ve got salt water taffy!” The little girl enthusiastically bought the product before beginning her day on Atlantic City’ beach. Thus the term “Salt Water Taffy” was coined. Then, in August of 1923 John Edmiston acquired a trade mark of “Saltwater Taffy” – he then tried suing many confectioners for using this term. It wasn’t until 1925 that the supreme court ruled that Edmiston could not technically own the term “Saltwater Taffy”, and so the Trademark was revoked.

As customers visit our store, we make sure to let them know that Saltwater Taffy may have been invented on the Jersey Shore, but it was perfected on the World’s Most Famous Beach!

What is Sea Foam Candy?

What is Sea Foam Candy?

Sea Foam(also known as Sponge Candy) get its name from its appearance. It definitely resembles the appearance of Sea Foam you would find on the World’s most Famous Beach.

This candy is a light golden brown in color with a crispy consistency. The best way I have always described this candy is as a maple flavored candy with the consistency and crispiness of a Malt Ball.

It’s ingredients include Corn Syrup, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Baking Soda, and Vanilla Flavoring

Order some Sea Foam by visiting it’s product page here.

Most Popular Flavors of Taffy

What are the most popular flavors of taffy?

Here at Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweet Shop, we have come up with 101 flavors of taffy. Out of all these flavors ten are known as the favorites. Here is a list of the top ten taffy flavors:

  1. Fruit Punch – This fruity colorful piece of taffy has earned its spot at number one. Besides its amazing design of six different colors, it has a very sweet, fruity, and tart flavor as well. The colors of Fruit Punch can all also be found in our Zeno’s logo.
  2. Banana – This bright yellow piece of taffy is loved by many. It is very eye appealing, and it tastes just like a fresh ripe banana.
  3. Vanilla – This white piece of taffy was the first flavor of taffy made here at Zeno’s.
  4. Chocolate – When you eat a piece of our chocolate taffy, you’ll know it ours. We make sure to put plenty of cocoa powder in the mix so you can enjoy every bite. You will think you are eating an actual piece of chocolate.
  5. Cotton Candy – This light blue piece of taffy makes it seem like you are eating the real thing. It has a very bold flavor; you will forget you are eating taffy and not actual cotton candy.
  6. Watermelon – Looking at this piece of taffy you would think it’s a mini watermelon. It has a green outer layer, pink center, and little black dots to resemble seeds. Not only does it look great, it tastes even better.
  7. Birthday Cake – This cake flavored taffy looks just like a slice of a funfetti vanilla cake and tastes just like it too.
  8. Strawberry – This red colored piece of taffy not only tastes like a strawberry, it looks like one too. We add green stripes into the red to resemble those on actual strawberries.
  9. Sex on the Beach – Usually known for being an adult beverage, we made it into a taffy for you. This fruity mix of peach, pineapple, and orange combined into one did the trick.
  10. Creamsicle – This white and orange blended taffy is our vanilla and orange put together. Looks great and tastes great.

What allergens are in your products?

What allergens are in your products?

This is a question we get asked at least once a day at both our stores and our website. While we do our best to limit cross-contamination and keep production of all of our candies separate, all of them may contain or come into contact with the following ingredients:

  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Tree nuts/peanuts
  • Gluten
  • Egg
  • Gelatin
  • Cocoa

Due to the risk of cross-contamination, we always recommend customers with severe food allergies to NOT consume our products. It is best to be safe, rather than sorry!

How Salty is Saltwater Taffy

Salt Water Taffy – Not as Salty as you’d think!

We’ve all been there – it’s your first time being on the East Coast beaches, your first encounter with the cold Atlantic Ocean feels amazing in the nearly blistering 98° currently being experienced at the World’s Most Famous Beach. However, while goofing off with a relative a wave swept in from behind knocking you down, causing a shock to your system as you try to inhale quickly…However, you were just a couple seconds late and now you’ve gone and swallowed what felt like gallons of Salt water! Gross! Why would anyone want to make such a sweet treat like saltwater taffy using real saltwater?

That’s just it…there is absolutely NO saltwater in Saltwater taffy! In fact, some cases (such as our own here at Zeno’s) literally no salt gets added at all. I know what you are thinking…. “Isn’t that false advertisement or something? ‘Saltwater’ taffy does not actually have saltwater?” In all actuality, the term “Saltwater Taffy” was coined in the late 1800’s by a confectioner by the name of David Bradley. But even then, saltwater was not an ingredient in the taffy…it was just conveniently sold by a large body of saltwater (Atlantic Ocean).

How To Fix Melted Taffy

Why did my taffy melt and how can I fix it?

You’ve just received your order of The World’s Most Famous Taffy™, opened the box to enjoy the freshly made treat…but unfortunately it is slightly melted and much softer than usual. So what do you do to fix this?

Well before we get to the solution of the problem, let us learn just how this problem occurred. Taffy, like most candies is very heat sensitive and can begin to melt when put through high temperatures. (Very similar to the inside of a mail truck to be specific.)

So what is the best plan of action if your taffy is melted? First, don’t panic! Taffy is just as sensitive to cold as it is hot, meaning that melted taffy is easily rejuvenated to its regular consistency. The best solution to melted taffy is merely to let it set unbothered at room temperature (72 for a period of 24 hours.

Despite the candy being a bit melted, it does not mean it is still not absolutely delicious. So if you cannot wait for your taffy to firm up again, and you want to attack your order right away, go right ahead! We promise not to tell anyone!

How many pieces of taffy are in a pound?

How many pieces of taffy are in a pound?
Believe it or not, this is a very common question. You wouldn’t be here reading it if it wasn’t.

Though this number has changed throughout the years due to upgrades in equipment, the current amount of pieces of our World’s Most Famous Taffy™ in a single pound is now approximately 68-70 pieces. Of course, the amount of number pieces per pound made by other taffy companies will vary as we all make different shapes and sizes. Here at Zeno’s, we manufacture a “kiss” style of taffy as oppose to a log style which is very popular on the Jersey Shore and the Smokey Mountains.

Currently, we use 2 different high speed cut wrap machines. One is known as a Rose 503 CTW, and the other is known as a Forgrove 42C. Both of these machines have the ability to cut and wrap taffy at speeds of 450 pieces/per minute. That is approximately 6.5 pounds per minute. Not too shabby!

These machines also use a very limited amount of paper and provide a very tight twist and wrap. Our old cut wrap machine known as a Model K, which is still used widely in more of the Mom and Pop shops today, cuts and wraps approximately 110 pieces per minute. You can see these machines running in many different taffy stores across the USA.

This machine does a great job, but it does use a lot more paper to wrap the taffy and the twist isn’t as tight as some of the higher speed machines. It does, however, have one advantage. If you were giving a 1 pound of taffy to a friend as a gift, candy produced from a Model K does look like more candy than if made from one of the high speed machines. But, as a candy maker, I just always wanted to make sure that if a customer was paying for a pound of taffy, they were in fact paying for the candy, and not so much for the paper. Who wants to ear paper anyways?

How Long Does it Take to Pull Taffy

Pulling Taffy…How much Time is needed?

One of the most common questions we get in our stores is in regards to our Famous Taffy Puller we have in the front windows of our retail locations. Those machines are by far the best employees any boss could ever ask for.

The purpose of pulling the taffy is to add air in to the candy. This allows for millions of air bubbles to form which is how a clear batch of cooked taffy all of a sudden begins to turn bright white. The added air into the product also adds volume, and turns the candy into a much larger piece. After the taffy has turned white, color and flavoring is then added according to the flavor it is.

When pulling the taffy, the candy only needs to be on the machine for about 15 minutes. The piece of taffy being pulled in the window of our stores pulls all day long. Every 5-10 minutes we check on it to see if it needs to be sprayed with fresh water to keep humidity into the product. This keeps the taffy from drying out. This piece is a display only and will never be used to produce any taffy to consume.

How Many Flavors of Saltwater Taffy are there?

Saltwater Taffy flavors…How many are there?

As the self proclaimed World leader in our variety of taffy flavors, this article may be the one we will constantly change most frequently.   When we first opened our doors in 1948, we only carried an assortment of 10 flavors. As time has passed, that number has escalated 10 fold…literally.

We are now over the century mark with our taffy flavors, as we announced Pineapple Upside Down Cake as flavor #101. Though we strive to create new flavors all the time, they are not always homeruns!

We have definitely experienced some strikeouts throughout the years. One of them that comes to recent memory is BBQ Potato Chip. While I am confident this will eventually be a great flavor, it still needs to gets lots of kinks worked out.

Whenever a customer orders taffy online or visits one of our stores, they are given a Flavor Card. This allows the customer to see what flavors they are in fact eating, and also provides an entire list of all of our flavors. We do make some seasonal flavors from time to time that are not part of the 101 flavors and they are limited edition.

We are always able to make custom flavors for customers too. We do it all of the time and they are quite fun to do. Creativity is the key to our success! If you have a Saltwater taffy flavor you think we should try, let us know and email us at

How is Saltwater Taffy Made?

How is Taffy Made?

While there is not one simple answer to this question, the process tends to be the same for all the Saltwater Taffy Manufacturers out there.

Cooking:The taffy making process usually starts with the same common ingredients of Corn Syrup, Sugar, Oil/Butter, Flavoring and Coloring. These ingredients are then combined and cooked up to a certain temperature. Each company cooks their recipes a bit differently I am sure, but most of us tend to cook the taffy to around 250 degrees.

Pulling/Whipping: The taffy is then poured onto a cooling table and given time to cool. Once it has done so, it needs to then be aerated. Some manufacturers like to “pull” their taffy, others like to use a “whipping” process. The purpose of both of these is to add air into the product. This process causes millions of tiny air bubbles to form which is how a clear batch of cooked candy, all of a sudden begins to turn bright white. The added air into the product also adds volume and turns the candy into a much bigger piece.

Throughout the years, we have used both techniques. Most all of our taffy right now is made using the whipping process, but we made our name (and our Logo) by utilizing the Pulling Method. They both make a fantastic product, but as these older pulling machines get harder to find, new accommodations have been made. We are very lucky that our taffy is still just as great as it was in 1948. Most will tell you it is even MUCH better, and we are very proud of that!

Flavor and color: Once the taffy has been properly aerated, this is when flavor and color is added. Here at Zeno’s, imaginations tend to go overboard during this process. You don’t get to 100+ flavors without a great level of enthusiasm and let’s admit it, some courage too. Our crew is constantly trying to come up with new flavors, and they do a really great job at it.

Cutting and Wrapping: Once the taffy has been flavored and colored, the candy is then taken to the cut wrap machine. We use 2 different machines. One is known as a Rose 503, and the other is known as a Forgrove 42C. Both of these machines take the taffy and wrap it at about 450 pieces per minute.

The taffy is then packaged and available for consumption to be sold to the public.

Gluten Free Taffy

Is your Taffy Gluten Free? What’s in this stuff?
At Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweetshop, we do not use any ingredients that contain gluten in the taffy making process. However, we manufacture many different types of candies and ice cream in which we do use gluten. For this reason there is always a chance of cross contamination. We always recommend our customers who has severe allergies to NOT consume any of our products as all of our products are manufactured in the same facility and on the same equipment that process gluten.

Does Saltwater Taffy Melt?

Does Saltwater Taffy melt?

As a company that ships out tens of thousands of pounds of our World’s Most Famous Taffy™ a year. This is a question we get a lot! It is definitely a valid concern when deciding whether or not you would like to have some of our Saltwater Taffy shipped to you or to a friend as a gift.

Saltwater taffy, without a doubt can and will melt if left in the heat for too long. The beauty about the World’s Most Famous Taffy™ is that if given time in proper room temperature conditions, it will firm up and get back to where it was originally. Of course, there is a chance of some seepage of candy through the wrapper, but if the candy has a tight twist on it, this should be very limited if none at all. Also, if your Saltwater Taffy leaks from the paper and sticks with other pieces of candy, these should easily pull apart with a very limited amount of mess when the candy has reached the proper temperature again.

Because of the characteristics I mentioned above, our World’s Most Famous Taffy™ is a great product to ship all over the world. We have shipped as far as Australia and to our troops serving overseas in the hot conditions of the Middle East.

How We Make Our Ice Cream

One of the best decisions ever made at Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweetshop was in 2003 when we began to make our homemade ice cream and specialty flavors.

Though we had no idea what we were doing at the time, we had so much fun creating the many different flavors and combinations; we couldn’t wait to stumble upon the next great taste-treat.

Since then, Zeno’s Hard-Pack Ice Cream has gained legendary popularity throughout the country and the world.

Let us take you behind the scenes here at Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweetshop and tell you how our ice cream is made.

Ice cream is a blend of cream, egg yolks, whole and skim milk, sugar & flavorings, and typically, the better the quality the ingredients, the better the ice cream. Butterfat is the magic behind great ice cream, and the greater the amount, the creamier the texture and the fuller the flavor. But that’s not all; the steps that follow make all the difference in the world between just OK ice cream, and terrific ice cream.

Premium ice cream is between 12 – 14% butterfat; at Zeno’s we use a 14% mixture. The mix is pre-chilled before going into the churn where the dasher (the paddle) whips the mix into thickly textured, but not quite frozen state. As the semi-frozen ice cream leaves the churn, we then add layer upon layer of the extra goodies and treats that make up our menu of flavors.

Once the tub is full, it is immediately placed into a deep freeze (-20° F) for at least 24 hours. This ensures that the ice cream hardens quickly so ice crystals do not form that would interfere with the creamy texture and rich flavor. On the following day it is brought to the store where you can enjoy the freshest hard-pack ice cream available anywhere.

The goodies and treats added to our ice cream; fudge, brownies, caramel, {list} are made from scratch in our kitchen with the same care and attention we give every one of the confections that bear our name. There are a few items we don’t make ourselves, all being the branded items we add from time-to-time (such as Reese’s Pieces) to create our variety of flavors, textures, and taste combinations.

There’s nothing like a few scoops of your favorite ice cream flavors tucked into a freshly made waffle cone. And that’s what you’ll find at each of our locations; cones that are made from scratch behind the counter throughout the day, so every cone in the store is as fresh as can be.
